Meet the Maker

Erin E. N. Cartmell

Now, with over 17 years of ceramic experience under my belt, it is hard to believe that as a high school student I was plunged into my first pottery class as the result of a clerical error: Despite such inauspicious beginnings, I soon realized that clay was in my bones. I received a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Biola University in Los Angeles, CA, and have continued my artistic education in any way I could ever since. I love things of beauty that are not relegated to a gallery or museum. Functional pottery, along with woodworking, jewelry, textiles, and other handicrafts, bring beauty people's everyday lives and isn’t that really where we need it the most?

Earthbound's Artistic Values

Handmade objects are my passion. The humanity inherent in something crafted by hand connects people. It places a person's need for beauty, functionality, and human connection on an equal level. This care and attention is embodied in a simple, tangible form. Maybe it's a mug, or a tea towel, or a painting, but what is expressed in that simple object is more that words can say.

I am person, who cares about people, and with my human hands (imperfect but always filled with love and compassion), I strive not only to fill a persons need for something with which to drink their tea, but also to give them something beautiful and unique: it’s an outpouring of my heart and hands to yours.

Process

I love teaching people about pottery: it's ancient, it's beautiful, it's frustrating, yet mesmerizing. I learn more every day I am in my studio, and I love it. The clay and the process always manage to surprise me.
